review 1: Practical Guide for the Non-Racer. I felt there were places where Grant Peterson was just being anti-racing because he's so sick of the racing world's ridiculous push for faster times by sacrificing everything else, even health. And he's right. But the tone was a little defensive. However, overall, the book is a breath of fresh air about biking -- how to do it as part of a healthy, happy lifestyle that involves far fewer cars and far more time outdoors. He had some great tips on maintenance and bike choice and fitting that could only come from decades of experience in a bike shop. I recommend reading the book, if only as a way to break out of the racer mind set and start enjoying your bike. Grant Peterson sent me this copy because I won his Goodreads Give... moreaway.
review 2: This is absolutely a polemic, and if you're in any way enamoured of bicycle racing, it will either enrage you, or make you question your behaviour and attitudes. But if you just like riding a bike for its own sake, or as a means of transportation, you may find yourself nodding your head in agreement. There's no doubt that most of the commercial cycling industry is driven by the racing fraternity, making it somewhat inaccessible, largely impractical and a little too clubby and arcane for most people. Peterson calls for a return to cycling fun, and even shoots the sacred cow of the helmet! Wow! One can easily contrast the North American obsession with "serious cycling" with the truly practical, commuter bike culture observed in other countries. less

A fun look at the practical, non-racer approach to being on two wheels.
