review 1: A beautiful story of faith, hope, and love set during the early days of the Church amidst the darkness and violence of the Roman Empire. Miriam, a young Jewish woman and a Christian, meets and falls in love with Marcus, a Roman soldier and officer. They are torn apart again and again by circumstances and beliefs, testing them both but never wavering their love. Miriam maintains her faith through the worst of trials and refuses to marry outside of it, much as it pains her. I admired the firmness of her stand. I also admired the pure faith of the early Christians – it is so unlike our own. They seemed to understand (or at least accept) God’s will and leading so well. God’s perfect timing is greatly emphasized in this story, especially in Miriam’s case. He works all t... morehings for good. This book brings Jerusalem’s last days vividly to life, as well as the decadence and glory of Rome. Most of all though, it is a love story that illustrates God’s faithfulness. I originally read this in high school for a book report and enjoyed revisiting it. Favorite quotes: “And though it be sharp, your pain is no more than you can bear, else it would never be laid upon you.” – Nehushta “She was young, and of little experience, yet as she sat there watching the ever-shifting sea, there came upon her a great sense of the instability of things and an instinctive knowledge of their vanity. The men who were great one day, whose names sounded in the mouths of all, in the next could vanish, disgraced or dead.” “In Rome everything is known – even the truth sometimes.” – Marcus
review 2: 3.5, really. This was a great book: great storyline, great characters, great action and dialogue, and great descriptions. The thing that bothered me was the repetetive reinstating of the belief that your soul goes straight to heaven when you die. As a fourth-generation Seventh-day Adventist, I do not believe that. I know that there are a lot of Christians who have this belief, it's just not mine. Also, the Christians of the Roman period were not baptized by sprinkling; they were baptized by full immersion. And babies were not baptized. Was the author of this book Catholic?Otherwise, I enjoyed this book. less
