review 1: This is a real treat to read after my first 4 months here in Cleveland. Who knew Cleveland was on of the best cities in the country before it took a nosedive over the last 60-70 years? He spends the first 1/3 of the book relaying Cleveland's history. He illuminates some reasons why the city is as rundown and segregated as it is, something I noticed within days of arriving. If you aren't familiar with the city, it might be less exciting. The rest of the book touches on the major moments of his life in relation to the city. I like his wandering, conversational style, and the seemingly mundane moments he presents and the almost naive, curmudgeonly nature of the author. No "plot" here, just stray observations. The black-and-white pencils are expressive and a great m... moreatch.
review 2: This is a black and white graphic novel abotu Harvey Pekar and Cleveland. It's told in first person, and offers not just a look at Pekar's life but at the history of Cleveland, told with a no-holds barred view. Pekar, a comic book writer and music critic, is probably best known for his comic series American Splendor. The book's graphic novel format is highly appropriate given the subject. The book is a fast read, with a conversational tone. Pekar goes through Cleveland's strengths and stumbles, as he has seen during his years in the area. A really good read for fans of Pekar's work and for local history buffs. less

Definitely on the slow side, but I warmed up to Pekar by the end.

A bit scattered, but a good final sweet look at Pekar's city.
