review 1: Loved the story--who wouldn't want to read the only authorized book about the 33 Chilean miners trapped for 69 days? It really is a miracle that the miners survived, first, and, second, that they were rescued. However, Tobar overdoes trying to do service to every one of the men's stories, both under and above ground. This is to the book's detriment. He jumps from one man's story to the next rapidly and frequently. I found it impossible to keep the men straight and probably looked at the photos of them at least a hundred times so that I could visualize what they looked like. Also, I agree with another reviewers comment that there should have been some diagrams so that the reader can better picture where they were and the various levels the men had access to while trap... moreped. It also would have been worthwhile to have a few photos of Camp Esperanza and of a few of the men after being rescued.
review 2: Most Excellent. I've been waiting for this book to come out for quite some time. I vividly remember the time that this mining disaster happened and how they plucked up from the bowels of the earth transmitted via various news outlets in America. The author did a great job dissecting the various voices from these miners. Not all of the voices were heard, but the miners who had a hand in surviving and getting out. It would be difficult to record all 33 miners for this story, but neverless their are some interesting characters in this tragedy. You'll get an understanding of really went down in the mine, the confrontations, the unity, etc. that they had to endure for what 78 days or something and over 700 meters underground ! You'll hear some of their stories, as well as stories from the loved ones i.e. - wives, girlfriends, mothers of these victims. As well, you'll be able to see how they coped once they were rescued and how they continue their lives. Well-written and a good overall feel good story. less

Not my usual cup of tea, but read this based on Ann Patchett's rave. Tough but compelling read.
