review 1: Teen jinni Nalia (last of her kind) "suffers" as the slave of a super-rich Hollywood bigwig, driving her fancy car, living in a mansion, and partying like a rock star...until the leader of the jinni resistance finds her and convinces her to attempt an escape and join the resistance. Lots to like about this book, including a Francesca-Lia-Block style depiction of life in Hollywood, but I think I wanted a little more cultural authenticity/specificity with the jinni stuff.
review 2: I have to admit I almost didn't pick this one up because of the title. It just sounds too much like a Johanna Lindsay bodice ripper. I was indeed surprised when I was sucked with a large slurping sound right into the pages of an ancient Grecian type society or maybe more Trojan and a s... moreupernatural mystery of sorts and romance. Many familiar elements, love triangles, girl torn between war ravaged and morally confused soldier and handsome but tepid resistance leader. There's quite a bit of torture, attempted rape, a brutal military academy and, of course, a grand plan for control of the empire shrouded in the mystery of the ancient ones. Oh, I'm sorry was did that sound sarcastic? Anywhoo I enjoyed it quite a bit and will absolutely seek out the next installment. Good for guys (many fights to the death) and girls (lots of soul searching) and any teen who needs another grand kind of epic-y book. less
