review 1: Not my favourite of Humphreys' books but I really loved how she described her brother's connection to music and her connecting the different approaches to music and writing, composing, playing, performing - her little section on Keats was stunning too and this quote from John Cage: "What we hear is determined by own emptiness, our own receptivity; we receive to the extent that are empty to do so." Music, art, film, reading - how true for them all!
review 2: Heartbreaking story of the author's brother's short - 4 month - struggle with cancer, told as addressed to him, after his death. He was a talented pianist - interesting as she is such a talented author. I met Helen at a women pilot's meeting when she had just finished writing her first, I think, book: Leavin
... moreg Earth. That book was a fictionalized account of women flying to break endurance records, endlessly circling over Toronto harbour. less
