review 1: What a beautiful writer Helen Humphreys is. In this historical fiction about the illicit love affair between Victor Hugo's wife, Adele, and his literary critic, Charles Sainte-Beuve, the human soul in its "delicate balance of happiness and melancholy" is examined. It is not hard to understand why Adele would stray. Hugo is portrayed as an ego driven man who only appreciated his loved ones when it suited him and was known by his family for everything being about him. His love for his wife was only for himself, and duty bound as she felt and mostly acted, Adele did find that loving Charles in the limited way that they managed was the greatest pleasure of her life. Ultimately, this is one of the saddest love stories ever. Sainte-Beuve wrote about it, and now, we have Humphrey... mores' gift of their story as well. She writes that "If you weep, you love." And I did.
review 2: Set in Paris during Napoleon III reign, this is a story based on fact about Victor Hugo, his wife Adele and their friend, Charles Saint-Beuve. Charles was also a writer, poet and critic, although not as famous as Victor. Charles and Adele were having an affair and Charles sometimes dressed as Charlotte to meet Adele in secret. When Victor discovered the affair, Charles and were no longer friends. Victor took his family into exile to Jersey and Guernsey to escape the politics of France at this time. less
