50 Book Pledge Featured Read: Crying for the Moon

Alright Savvy Readers, we have a new novel that will literally have you gasping, laughing, crying, you name it. And it’s Canadian. How about that?

You might know Mary Walsh from The Rosie O’Donnell Show, This Hour Has 22 Minutes or other CBC programming, a variety of films, the spokesperson for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind or Bell Let’s Talk, or many other places. Now, you can get to know her through her book: Crying for the Moon.

Crying for the Moon is an unforgettable story about Maureen Brennan, a young woman coming of age in the late 1960s in St. John’s Newfoundland. She’s the second youngest daughter of “the Sarge”—her mother—who is so angry and bitter that she spends her time bullying her children and husband. Moreover, school is torture as the nuns watch every move she makes. So, fair warning: the first few chapters of this book might be a little emotionally challenging. Needless to say, Maureen has had a rough upbringing and she’s ready to make her life bigger and better.

Maureen fakes her way into the school choir to get to sexy, exciting Montreal where she hopes to become a part of Expo 67. But once she’s there, Maureen and her best friend escape the eye of Sister Imobilis and sneak out into the city, where they unfortunately make some ~real bad~ decisions. From such a young age, Maureen’s decisions change the course of Maureen’s life forever.

This book is unputdownable. You’ll find yourself needing to know what’s going to happen to Maureen, how her life is going to turn out and how she’s going to deal with the decisions she’s made. Maureen is such unique, powerful, brave, invincible character that you will downright adore (and maybe sometimes be disappointed in, too).

It’s a unique coming of age story—nothing like I’ve ever read before—and definitely one I won’t be forgetting. What do you think, Savvy Readers? Will you be reading Crying for the Moon? Tell us on Twitter @SavvyReader or in the comments below!
