review 1: There's a lot of writing about China in Africa these days. Howard French's book sets itself apart from most of the others by explaining China's interest in the continent through a series of road trips. The book is crammed with anecdotes about newly arrived Chinese immigrants and the Africans who interact with them from Mozambique to Senegal. French's ability to speak French and Mandarin (and Spanish as a partial subsitute for Portuguese while in Mozambique) helps him pick up the nuances and get beyond the politesse. A good read especially for those who are unaware of this current demographic wave and its implications for Africa and the world.
review 2: A rag tag collection of journalistic experiences in Africa with Chinese migrants. There is very little over-ar

French shows himself to be a journalist as opposed to someone who knows about politics, economics, or history. His reactions to people and pontification leave somewhat to be desired. less
