review 1: A Meal in Winter is a beautiful book but extremely sad. Some stories, books, and films wrap up their narrative with a beautiful message of how good triumphs over evil and about how in great tragedy people find their common humanity and band together. This story does not quite go that far. It may be the story of how individuals lived through morally ambiguous moments trying to survive. This story stayed with me like the aftertaste of a delicious meal eaten in Hell. As if "No Exit" were a dinner party where the guests did not have to be guilty to receive their sentences... An interesting exploration of people clinging on to their humanity in hellish circumstances.
review 2: Wonderful short novella with a flat tone, appropriate for its subject matter. There are no
... more frills in Mingarelli's writing, it feels real and to the bone, deeply cutting the reader with the inevitability of the choices we make and behaviours we exhibit during a war. A good read and a refreshingly human story with no twists, no happy ending, utterly non self-indulgent, well edited and thought provoking. Recommended, however be warned: this does not make for light reading... less
