review 1: There's something about Russia that's always intrigued me. While I firmly believe that Vladimir Putin is a horrible, horribly human being, I can even appreciate him in a sort of 'sad excuse for a Bond villain' sort of way. Ian Frazier is supposed to be an amazing travel writer, and Travels in Siberia got stellar reviews. I thoroughly enjoyed the first dozen or so pages, after which I realized that I was up for a long magazine article length travel essay on Siberia, but not a 471 page book.
review 2: Ian Frazier's writing style and honesty are perfect for this slow-moving, detailed travelogue in contemporary Siberia. We learn not only about the places he visits, but the people he comes to know, and Frazier himself, warts and all. And we learn that Siberia is a
... moren oddly fascinating place. For those who are interested in more, I recommend 'The Shaman's Coat,' by Anna Reid, which gives a detailed cultural history of the many tribes annihilated by Russian colonialism and infectious diseases. The Siberia Frazier describes is a very different place, but also interesting. less

I thoroughly enjoyed "traveling through Siberia" with this book. I almost felt like I was there.

Needs a good editor. One trip would have been enough. Five is self-indulgent.

Great read for a traveler at heart living with 3 small pre-travelers.
