review 1: What a fun read! The author takes us through his experiences of racism and religious dilemmas in an often comical way. So much so that you forget how hurtful and frightening it really must have been for a young child. What I loved about this book is his refreshing honesty in every aspect. No thoughts or emotions kept hidden. It was also interesting to hear his views on ' wahhabism' which was only just appearing in the UK then. I'd really love to know how he feels now that it's spread so thoroughly. My only gripe is we never do find out if he has an arranged marriage? I've since found he has another book called 'the perfect gentlemen' which apparently does contain this information but I don't know if it's just an updated version of this book?Either way I would definitely r... moreead more of his books with pleasure.
review 2: Three and a half to be accurate! This Was my first time to read a memoir so I'm not here to rate it as a type. Here I'll go more generic and persist I did enjoy the reading!. although there's nothing really special about the plotting and I did not see it any funny as ppl were exaggerating! What I really enjoyed was how the writer introduced the beautiful moderate Islam and how forgiven and open-minded moderate Muslims really are, unlike the ugly image that some western governments and communities are keen to promote. Imran reflects a huge population of similar forgiven and open minded Muslims existing all around the world and how some Muslim extremists unfortunately are distorting this beauty with their acts of extreme violence. I also like how the writer objectively revealed the ugly face of some of the racist west communities and how intolerant they are when it comes to accepting the other which leads sometimes in activities that are as much violent and brutal as what Muslim extremist do!!.. TERRORISM HAS NO RELIGION!! It's not the religion beliefs that only counts what really counts is how you articulate and implement those beliefs and how tolerant you are to all life challenges ,including the other differences, and still be good to yourself and your surroundings.. How to promote good deeds and stop being judgmental.. How to really believe in god and his power and leave ppl judgment to the all mighty god.. and as true Muslims always believe: there's no one Muslim and there's no one other, ppl are good and bad so accepting the other is a must because simply if one's really sure about his/her own beliefs they will start to see the other and accept live peacefully together as one. less

Interesting, if overly long, perspectives on growing up Muslim in England.

The story is interesting but I didn't think it was very well written.

May be one of the sweetest voices in non-fiction I've ever read.
