review 1: I found this book a bit hard to get into, but I did get into it, and am thinking about it a lot now that I'm done. At first I was a bit uneasy with the writing style, in part because of all the Zimbabwean slang, and also because the writing is very unsentimental. Fairly brutal things happen at time, but there's no wallowing, pages of internal struggle and monologue. There's so little of that that it feels now like some plot twists were unexplained or unresolved. Or maybe there were just some things that I didn't get. But I don't think that bothers me, now that I'm done. I'm left more with the story of the relationship and a real feeling about living in Zimbabwe during the '80s and '90s that I enjoyed most of all.

I'm going to withhold my comments at this time. Looking forward to the discussion on LFPC.
