review 1: While some reviewers did not like the fact that Troost shares a bit of his struggle with alcoholism, I did not mind it and , in fact, appreciated his honesty. Travel writing is about one's impression of places visited. How can one ignore the filters of personal experience in this case? Indeed, being away from the eyes of family and friends seems like a perfect way to lapse from recovery--so I applaud troost's laying it all out there. That aside, I once again enjoyed Troost's travels and commentary, this time framed by the journeys of Robert Louis Stevenson. Maybe not as laugh-out-loud funny as the Sex Lives of Cannibals or Lost on. Planet China, but I still had quite a few chuckles throughout my vicarious trip through the South Pacific.
review 2: Picked this up
... more at the library because our book choice this month is Nancy Horan's book about Robert Louis Stevenson. Troost's book is the story of his battling alcoholism while traveling through the South Pacific Islands just as Stevenson did over 100 yrs ago. I liked this. At times he is quite funny and his descriptions of the people and scenery are excellent. His battle with alcoholism was honest and possibly helpful to other alcoholics. less

To like this book you need to like two things : this author & his other books. Otherwise a mash up.

Not nearly as funny as the author's earlier books, but still an enjoyable read.

Funny at times, dull at others.
