review 1: I picked this up on the Reader's Choice shelf at the library. I don't always like the books on that shelf, but I really liked this one. It is a murder mystery/paranormal novel set in San Francisco about nine years after the earthquake and fire. It isn't the usual genre that I like, but the author did a great job in pulling me into this world. It wasn't too cheesy and unbelievable, and it wasn't too haunting that I was scared to read it. I liked the time period, the setting, and the characters. It got a little gruesome at times, and the tangent of mythology was a bit confusing, but that was probably just me. I really liked how the author dealt with death and spirits. I guess I just didn't feel it was as hokey as it could have been. It was dark, but not too dark. A... morenyway, it was an intriguing read and very detailed to the time period and setting. If you like this kind of novel, I think you would enjoy this book. It isn't fluffy reading for sure.
review 2: I am surprised how much I enjoyed this book. I liked the setting of it and the premise, i.e. ghosts. I thought it was quite clever, although I can't give it five stars because I didn't care for the reliance on the medium. I thought the author could have moved the plot forward without using this type of cliche as much. But still, that is my preference. It is definitely worth the time to read if you want a little G-rated romance and mystery. less

I don't normally read books that are about murders and ghosts but this one was pretty good.
