review 1: Funny, quick read about a boy who struggles in school and following rules but means well. He lives in LA with his parents, dog, and pet monkey and excels at skateboarding and parkour in this sequel to My Life As A Book. Although I haven't read the first one, this read easily and smoothly with just enough background information to introduce me Derek and his friends and family before jumping right into the story.
review 2: Entertaining and comedic story with definite parallels to the ever popular Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. This story is less mean spirited than that one, and its protagonist, though a bit of a troublemaker and one who struggles in school, isn't as morally corrupt as Greg Heffley. The plot of this book centers on a potential gig as a stunt perso
... moren for a movie after the hero, Derek, was spotted doing some amateur parkour. A secondary plot revolves around a monkey his family is fostering as a potential service animal. Derek is a really nuanced and interesting character who genuinely wants to do good. This makes you genuinely care about his failures. I think this will certainly appeal to kids who are looking for humor and realistic fiction, with a dash of Hollywood magic. Just a note to those who might be confused by its illustrated cover: the book features illustrations in the margins (definitions of words, which is how Derek learns vocabulary) but it is not as heavily illustrated as Diary of a Wimpy Kid or the Big Nate books, which may be a bit of a turn off for those looking for a full blown graphic novel. However, its 5.0 AR level will certainly be appealing to its target age group, as some of the other heavily illustrated titles along the same vein (Big Nate, Dork Diaries) are on a lower reading level. less
