review 1: I read the an early bound ms. of Jasmine Warga's MY HEART AND OTHER BLACK HOLES for a foreign publisher. This story deftly, realistically and compellingly handles the tough subject of a suicidal character—and not just one, but two. Aysel (pronounced Uh-ZELLE) who carries a “black slug” in her middle that robs her of all happiness meets Roman, a.k.a. “Frozen Robot” who is battling his own serious depression. They decide to be suicide partners to escape their lives and family tragedies. Not surprisingly, but unpredictably, things change along the way. Tense, heart breaking, sweet, and even uplifting, it will stick with you long after you close the cover.
review 2: I read an ARC of this book as a member of the Freshman Fifteens. Aysel’s father has comm
... moreitted an unspeakable crime as the result of a mental illness. Aysel fears that she may turn out to be just like him. Isolated from her peers and feared by her mother (who has started a new family), Aysel turns to an internet site where “suicide partners” can find each other. Enter Roman, a star athlete with a family tragedy he cannot escape. As Aysel and Roman plan the specifics of their suicide, they understandably grow closer, as they are the only ones they know who can understand something of what the other is feeling. As Aysel begins to wonder if she might have something to live for after all, she looks for a way to help Roman see the same thing, but the countdown to their suicide date is ticking, and Roman has made it clear from the beginning that he does not want his suicide partner to “flake” out on him. This book had me in tears, and although I have never struggled with the question of suicide, I feel it has given me some insight into how to help someone suffering from depression. less
