review 1: A book with 5 short stories inside it, "Emily Says Hello" and "&" were by far my favorite stories. "Emily Says Hello" is a rather seedy piece that, only at the end, turns somewhat beautiful in its simplicity. Equally, "&" is a sentimental tale that doesn't seem to make much sense the first time through, and yet has a quintessential ending, perfect in its sentiment. The other three are pretty good as well, but these two struck a certain chord that made me really appreciate Jason's tact, thoughtfulness and willingness to leave how the story ends really up to the reader. A delightful and surprisingly quick book.
review 2: The five vignettes in this book have a deadpan charm that is sweet and sad. Jason, a Norwegian, shows the same sort of quiet sadness that I'... morem used to seeing in Scandinavian fiction. There is little talking, lots of pauses, and wry commentary. The clean, simple animal characters with Little-Orphan-Annie eyes work very well with the complexities of each story. The stories range from a murder mystery to a wild-west chess match to alien abduction. Each story has a punchline melancholy punchline that could be at home in narrative soup made of Alfred Hitchcock and film noir. Sharp and thought-provoking. less
