review 1: A fascinating and thought provoking exploration of humans' relationship (or lack there of) with the natural world. The book--broken into three parts: nature as it was, as it is, as it might be-- offers lyrical descriptions of the natural world as well as an examination of how human denial and "change blindness" has led to a world where countless species are either extinct or on the verge of extinction. It concludes with suggestions on how we might learn to co-exist with nature in a different, less destructive way. Where to start? The author has many suggestions but here's one we can all do today. “Pay attention,” MacKinnon writes, “and we will value nature more.” What we value, we might also try to preserve
review 2: I was fortunate to hear MacKinnon in
... moretroduce his exhibit based on the idea of rewilding at the Museum of Vancouver and was immediately taken with the idea of taking a closer look at our interactions with nature. Bringing together his own travels and experiences with historical ecology, MacKinnon shows the reader a new way of looking at the world. I expected this book to feel more negative with its discussion of disappearing species and habitats, but aside from the usual feeling of loss, it was quite manageable. I couldn't put it down and annoyed my friends by begging them to read it and telling them facts about long-extinct species. I'm looking forward to setting out on my next trip into the backcountry with my eyes mitre fully open to the habitat we inhabit and our role in it. less
