review 1: A chance pickup in the local library...It's a conversation between a noted Italian author and a French author, screenwriter, and film-maker. It's like sitting in a room with these guys while they just talk about all sorts of things - the history of books and films, book collecting, how to translate books to film (i.e. word to images), how the internet affects (or doesn't affect) books, old books from before the Gutenberg Bible, philosophy, how history is affected by written knowledge...I could go on and on. It's the kind of book I'd like to reread in 10 years, comparing the changes in book technology to their ideas.

Eco and Carrière are two of the most cultivated, intellectually lively and altogether entertaining peopl... moree on Earth, and reading this book makes you want to have tea with them just to hear them talking of their book collection or the people they have met. I read this book in Italian (the original version is French, I recall), and partially agree with those who criticize the lack of actual discussion of the current book situation and the displaying of knowledge and anectodes by the two authors, but actually the book is more interesting the more they go away from the actual topic of discussion. less
