review 1: Meh. A life story needs something unusual to make it worth reading - unusual events, a striking central character, extraordinary insight - SOMEthing. This is just an account of a messed-up youth like a million others. It's not well written or edited, despite the author's apparently working as an editor. Good on her for getting her act together eventually, but it isn't much of a read. I can only assume the high ratings come from friends.
review 2: Musical Chairs in a very fitting title for this memoir, complete with an emotional roller coaster ride through the author's life. I was eager to read Knox's memoir, as drugs and alcohol were an issue within my family during my own adolescent years. I found that many of the experiences depicted throughout are commonpla
... morece amongst children from broken homes. Many options were made available to better her situations and it was extremely frustrating to read how they were overlooked or carlessly passed off like garbage. With a story of such heartache one would expect to come across some sort of inspirational message to pull the reader in the right direction if they picked this book up hoping to relate to or learn something from it. I don't feel that there is anything remotely like this in this book.Alcoholism is as serious as mental health and I felt that something was missing. A few questions kept popping up in my mind during my reading such as, Did she get help for her addiction? Why isn't she talking about her alcoholism in more detail? And what mental illness was she or someone in the family diagnosed with? Maybe I'm blind but I don't see it!The ending slipped up on me and, as I said before, I was still waiting for something to take away from my reading...an ispirational message to the masses, something, anything. But it never came. I do feel that Mrs Knox is a gifted story teller but I just wanted more from a book that would cost a reader $16.99. less
