review 1: This girl is F-U-N-N-Y! I love sarcasm, I love dry wit, I love references, I love irreverent humor. Jen Lancaster delivers on all fronts. Although I have vowed never to stoop to the level of using the texting term "LOL" I will admit to lying in bed, book in hand, laughing uproariously (out loud.) If someone was to read this and not at least crack I smile I would recommend consulting your doctor about starting a course of SSRI's immediately.
review 2: Oh, how I desperately would love to be friends with Jen! She is so condescending and self-deprecating that laughter cannot be avoided. Then, I realize that Jen and I would not get along at all because two snarky people don't make a good friendship. (side note: Don't let my internet niceness fool you; in real life I
... more tend to be the one who continuously cracks inappropriate jokes, makes fun of others fashion choices even when I'm dressed in pajama pants, and loves being the center of attention. However, it has not yet affected my personal friendship so I consider that a plus. These wonderful personality traits don't translate all that well into brief book review comments so I put the kabash on the snarky and play up the sweet). Regardless of the status of our fictional friendship, I enjoy reading her books because she often says that things that run through my head...and occasionally come flying out of my mouth. In the fourth installment from the hallowed posts of Jennsylvania, Jen explains the life-altering situations in the 70's, 80's, and 90's that made her into the person she is today - complete with what she was wearing when said events went down. I didn't think this book was as good as her previous three (perhaps due to a lack of a central theme) but I was still entertained and couldn't hold in a couple of chuckles during particularly funny parts. And, that extra 0.5 stars was awarded because the front of the book contains green and pink argyle socks....argyle is the new plaid and pink and green is the current hot color scheme among L.L. Bean-lovin' east coasters (whom I try to emulate since forced to live with them). Plus, when you remove the dust cover, the actual book is a really great bubble gum pink color. Hey, if Jen has taught us nothing else, looks can be important! Overall, Jen continues to entertain and I look forward to her next book which I believe is being written as we speak! less

This is the first Jen Lancaster book I read, simply because this ebook was immediately available for borrowing from the library. (I love being able to borrow ebooks through the Philadelphia Library's website!)She wrote a memoir of important moments in her life and used a piece of clothing as the symbol for each moment. It's a great idea. Unfortunately, she wrote herself as a real brat as a kid, teen and college student, and it was difficult for me to get through that. Once she got her first job and entered adulthood, I found her much more likable. I read some other reviews of Pretty in Plaid here on Goodreads and I think I'm going to give another one of her books a try. Any suggestions?
