review 1: 2.5 stars until the last 25% of the book or so. I was looking forward to this one after reading the blurb and the rave reviews, but I was disappointed. Now I'm really shocked at all the 5-star ratings. I'm usually pretty generous with ratings but the grammar and punctuation alone is pretty bad in this book. The writing overall just wasn't very good compared to what I'm used to reading. It often felt disjointed and unnatural, sometimes just trying too hard. And there were a lot of other little things that annoyed me (like all the grimacing all the time..."she grimaced", "he grimaced", over and over...Please, someone get a thesaurus!). Better editing would help, of course. I'm assuming this author is independently published and has limited resources, but I've read other self... more-pubished authors that are easily as good as most signed authors. The plot was pretty good, although I found the main character kind of hard to like a lot of the time (and naturally half the characters are inexplicably and almost immediately smitten with her). Things improved somewhat in the second half of the book. Still, I'm not sure if I'm interested enough in the story to get through the rest of the series. We'll see.
review 2: As soon as I finished this book, I bought the second one! Aro is a strong, compassionate main character, and the way she handles the world she’s thrown into is so different from so many other YA leading female characters. There’s no bowing down and accepting bad things happening to her. She’s a fighter, the kind of girl I want my teenagers to read about! And Prince! Oh, man, I cannot wait to get into his story! less
