review 1: This book was a graphic novel with a collection of stories focused around a school environment. I read "The Super Secret Ninja Club" which was about a group of boys who meet secretly at recess as ninjas. When another boy wants to join he is denied access until he has developed "super awesome" ninja skills. The new boy, Daryl, works very hard over Christmas break to master his ninja skills only to discover when school is back in session that the other boys have moved on to a new hobby. After displaying his skills the other boys who initially excluded Daryl are impressed enough to return to the ninja club under Daryl's tutelage. This story in particular could be used to introduce the subject of including everyone in activities and not excluding others. It also gives an ... moreexample of someone who works very hard to master a skill and the positive results that come from hard work. Being a graphic novel this book also provides students with a different way of looking at reading than they may be used to.
review 2: Ten different stories offer a good overview of the most popular graphic novel artists for middle grade today. Some use favorite characters (Babymouse, Lunch Ladies), while others have completely new and somewhat genre jumping choices (Eric Wright's talking cupcakes are quite a departure from My Dead Girlfriend, and Gene Luen Yang's strip shows that he has a knack for middle grade that should be explored). The theme of recess makes this a book that will always be in demand, so I was glad to see that it was printed in a three color format, since the pages will stay in the book better than the shiny type in multiple colors. (The orange seemed an odd choice, however-- maybe it was chosen because it was recently a popular color!) This would be a great stocking stuffer at the holidays, although I'd expect some squabbling if there are multiple children. They would all want to get their hands on the copy! less
