review 1: My normal policy is to only read books that are for entertainment only. This normally eliminates non-fiction books. After a couple of mediocre fantasy novels, I thought I may need to revise that policy, so I picked up this book. I had no previous knowledge of thru- hiking and have only done 3-4 miles max on a trail, so the concept was new. I enjoyed the sample, but once I started reading the book, I got bored. She hikes, she gets hungry and wet and tired- day after day. She meets some good people and some bad. And, she talks about God…I wish that had been on a warning sticker. I signed up to read about hiking, not about her religion. To be fair, I only got 54% of the way through the book. But, I’m done. Life is too short for this mess.
review 2:
... moreA very enjoyable book, Becoming Odyssa is an autobiographical account of a 21 year old college graduate, who decides to hike the Appalachian Trail from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine. She is hiking alone, although she meets many other thru-hikers along the way. She encounters many hardships, including finding a suicide victim along the trail, but she perseveres and trusts in God to help her on her journey. less

Oh, the pain and suffering of learning just who you are. A good account of backpacking long term.

If you liked Wild by Cheryl Strayed, you'll like this book. More epic hiking, less drama.
