When she learns from her son-in-law that her daughter, Laura is and alcoholic and needs to go into rehab, she is shocked. He begs her to take her grand daughter home with her even though she has spent very little time with her. Bailey is very angry and acts out constantly. Slowly she and Jean begin to,have a relationship. This is a novel about friendship, families and the challenges life can bring
review 2: I nearly stopped reading this book and at times I wish I had. Jean is a widow of two years and mother of two grown children. Her next door neighbor, Loretta, convinces her to start a book club to help fill the days and deal with the loss of her hus
... moreband. The members of the book club are a diverse lot-sex starved Loretta hooked on romance novels, I never met a right wing talk show I didn't like Mitzi, divorced Dorothy with 5 troublesome sons, single baker extraordinaire May, painfully shy and overweight Janet, and Jean. Out of the blue Jean receives a phone call from her son-in-law that her daughter is in the hospital and she needs to come. Unbeknownst to Jean, her daughter is an alcoholic and her not often seen granddaughter, Bailey, is a problem teenager. Bailey winds up going home with Jean and majorly acts out. Then the daughter, Laura, leaves rehab and ends up at Jean's house too. While the story primarily is about Jean, Laura, and Bailey the best parts for me were about the book club and how women as diverse as the members can be true friends through a love of reading. I was disgusted at how passive Jean was and kept asking myself why I was still reading this. I think it was because of the books. Most chapters started with Bailey writing an author about how she felt about their books. None of Jean's family was likeable and I had a hard time being sympathetic. I decided I kept reading for the book club. I loved them all especially Loretta who I want to be my next door neighbor. As quirky as they all were, I enjoyed reading about their lives and how much I wanted a group like this of my own. While I had a love/hate relationship with the story, I liked the easy way it was written and got caught up in the plot to see it until the end. less
