review 1: This is a funny book about a boy who was born prematurely and has many health issues. At 10 he has a seizure that requires that he either gets a therapy dog or a helmet. He gets the helmet (his mom doesn't want a dog peeing on the living room carpet) but is immediately involved in a bullying type incident which allows his to get the dog after all. The dog comes to them as a mistake. The dog has been chosen and specially trained for the President of the United States. Of course, in the meantime, the boy comes to love the dog and doesn't want him to go. This would be a good book to use to compare to Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo.
review 2: "What you will soon find out is that everyone had a tough life. What counts is how you handle your unfortunat
... moree circumstances."This is some of the best advice I have ever come across in a children’s book and it just so happens to come from a talking dog named Parker Elvis Pembroke IV (nicknamed Elvis) who is a two-hundred-pound Newfoundland. This story of friendship between a sickly boy and a dog is both heartwarming and hilarious. Issues of bullying, shyness, loneliness, peer pressure, and friendship are addressed in very entertaining and realistic ways. This is such a fun story that readers will not want to put this book down! Read this one quick because the next installment in the series, Elvis and the Underdogs: Secrets, Secret Service, and Room Service, comes out on May 27th! less
