review 1: The combination of cooking, a bake-off competition, Paris and Christmas was irresistible! I really enjoyed this book. A quick, lovely read for Christmas, especially when snuggled down under a lap duvet with a hot-water bottle and a glass of hot lemon and manuka honey (I read it in the throes of a nasty flu-y cold!). Rachel was a believable and sympathetic protagonist and the other characters were well-drawn too (well done, Jenny Oliver, to achieve this in such a short narrative!): the ghastly boyfriend, Henri the chef, his brother Philippe, the housekeeper Chantal who brings little gifts to Rachel's drab rented attic room, the other contestants and of course Rachel's mother whose memory drives her on to bake. It's a short novella but a cosy and delightful Christmas read, w... moreith humour and thoughtful reflections. The only reason I knocked off a star was because after I finished the book it stuck me that the action had all happened over a few days and it seemed somewhat far-fetched for such revelations to alter Rachel's life in such a short space of time. But I shall certainly look for this author again; I believe that this was a debut novel for Jenny. Bring on the mulled wine and mince pies - or rather, the gorgeously flavoured French macaroons and vin chaud!
review 2: I loved this book, every single little thing about it. It is laugh out loud funny, emotional and has a gorgeous leading man! I felt as though I was in Paris at Christmas, sampling all the wonderful food brought to life in front of my eyes. In fact, the only bad thing I would say about this book is - it made me want CAKE!! mmmmm!! A truly lovely and heart warming Christmas read. 5 big fat mint infused stars! less
