review 1: Wow...if I could get my money back I would. I understand that the author is one of the writers in the Writing Room for Revenge. I get that he took it upon himself to create a proposal, write the book, and submit the draft to Hyperion. That takes a great deal of guts! Especially since his comfort zone is writing scripts - not novels. That's fine. And it's not that I haven't read books that are far worse. Those books tend to get 1 star and are never finished. Luckily they are few and far between - as are 2 stars. So, what is my issue with this novel? First there were problems the author could not control. The formatting in my Nook book was atrocious. Words that should have been capitalized weren't. Words that should not have been capitalized were. Grammar made me question wh... moreether or not a copy editor had taken a look at the final digital draft before it went live. Again, the author had nothing to do with these issues - they are Hyperion's problem. And boy did it make the book difficult to read.My biggest concern, however, is that the eBook cost $8.99. This book that read more like a $2.99-$5.99 book cost me $9. The story was convoluted. The characters were not well developed. And, all in all, the book read like something a first time novelist writes, finishes and then sends to an editor not something polished and ready for major publication. As much as I hate to write scathing reviews for a first time novelist, especially knowing I will be one eventually, I cannot recommend this book as one you purchase unless it is on sale for less than $8.99. Hopefully the next book in the series, and I am sure there will be one, is more polished with far more characterization and a firmer plot. That will mean the author has learned from his first experience which will make this waste of my money worth it in the end. Because in the end, I did read the entire thing and will most likely read at least the sample of the next novel if only because I like the world and I know the author can do better.
review 2: I was going to give it 2 stars but I'm disappointed, so 1 star. I had high expectations from this book. I mean you're talking about Emily Thorne's revenge and the place she went to and all that and this is what you give us? I was on the third last chapter and I was like the book is ending but no revenge at all? Then it was kindly mentioned in the book how revenge had already taken place. Is that what you write a book for? It's not even a book, it's a novella. Are you going to turn it into a series now?Yes? - Why the hell not take more time and write it all at once instead of releasing a zillion novellas? No? - Why, then, introduce all those useless characters? I liked the writing but was that the revenge? Eh!Still, I'm going to read if you write any other revenge novel, I think. less
