review 1: A surprisingly enjoyable read for a book about a tragedy in an East End air raid shelter during the Second World War. My only reservation is that the author chose to employ considerable fictional licence. I am a little uneasy about that, not least because she created a story in which the investigating magistrate chose to suppress key findings, albeit with good intentions. I have no objection to this alternative story, but it seems to me that it is unfair to the memory of a real historical person to do this without also changing the name of the investigator.
review 2: This is an account of East End London's less-known but worst WWII civilian disaster. On the evening of 3rd March 1943, a gun battery was tested in Victoria Park causing panic to get to Bethnal Gree
... moren tube station being used as an air raid shelter. A woman fell over on the stairs leading down to the shelter in the panic causing a human avalanche in which 173 people lost their lives. This is their story. A fictional account but based on a true report. less

great book! I have a good friend who's mother had to seek safety in the tube stations during WW11.

I wish I hadn't read this. I think it's exploitative in the extreme.
