review 1: This was an informative book about a little boy who always felt he was different because although he was a little boy he was interested in little girl things. His mom would call him a boy but he would always correct his mom and say that he was a girl. His parents respected his wishes and referred to him as a girl and allowed him to change his name to Jazz. He could wear girl's clothing at home but had to dress like a boy out in public but absolutely despised this. His parents decided to take him to the doctor where it was discovered that he was transgender. This book could be used to talk about differences in the classroom and how it is important to accept others regardless of their differences. The book could be used as part of a text set on exceptionali... moreties.
review 2: This is a nonfiction story about a girl named Jazz who loves dresses, the color pink, and mermaids. She states that she used to be a boy, but that being a girl felt right while being a boy just felt unnatural. Her parents weren't sure as to why Jazz felt out of place as a boy, but after talking to a doctor, they discovered that Jazz is transgender- a girl in a boy's body. The book informs the reader about what transgender is exactly in a straightforward manner while focusing on how important acceptance is. This biography is very engaging to whoever's reading it; I can see it keeping children's interests as well as the interests of adults. It's obviously realistic and would serve as a great way to inform others as to what it means to be transgender. The art adds to the story and can keep the reader's attention. I also like that the other minor characters that were included were pretty diverse. To add, everyone was incredibly accepting of Jazz which sends a message of the importance of acceptance. The topic of gender is not too broad currently, so I was glad to find this one. Though my options are incredibly limited, if I had to choose one children's book about a someone who is transgender, it would definitely be this one. less
