review 1: I almost feel bad saying that I enjoyed this book because it's a memoir about a painful topic and it is set at a very difficult time in the author's life. My maternal grandmother was a hoarder, so I know how maddening it is to try to reason with someone who is in the grip of their possessions. Rather than focusing on stories about the hoard itself, this book talks about the interpersonal problems and unforeseen consequences of hoarding. This is a fast, high-interest read that I'd recommend to anyone who has had to deal with a loved one who is or was a hoarder.
review 2: Eh? After years of watching Hoarders, this book was somewhat of a letdown. The thing both mother and daughter needed most - counseling - is never mentioned. They just both go on their dysfu
... morenctional way. Reading it, you can easily see the codependency. I wanted to slap the daughter for not actually dealing with the issue, and for all the mother's sob story childhood - I get it - I still consider her mentally impaired, almost mentally disabled, like many hoarders, to the point where she was a danger to herself. Above all, she needed some serious counseling, which probably would have made her a happier person, but it doesn't appear she ever got it. Disappointing. less
