review 1: Thanks to Goodreads, I won this book. I loved it. Looking at some of the other reviews, I think some people are dismissing it as fluff. I thought it had quite a lot of substance beneath all of the fun. This book does a good job of pointing out some of the problems inherent in certain relationships, whether it's a marriage, a friendship, or the relationship a mother may have with her new children. The book cleverly disguises this with a layer of hilarity. While the plot may be absurd (can't get divorced? Consider murder instead!) it is intentionally so. Hollis rediscovers herself and makes some real friendships for the first time in years while plotting to kill her husband. I think this could speak to a lot of women who find themselves in a marriage but wit... morehout anyone else to turn to. I don't advise murder as the answer, however. In fact, for disclaimer purposes, don't ever murder anyone, okay? At the very least don't blame me. It's tough to describe the parts I loved best (and there were many) without giving away too many spoilers, so I will just say that the bitchy friends are always good for a laugh-especially Svetlana. I adore the fact that Hollis realizes her friends are just as wacky as she is. I recommend this book to anyone who likes stories about friendship or just wants to laugh. There will be a lot of laughter, but the book isn't fluff.
review 2: I think what I loved most about this book was the food. Food is so neglected in fiction unless the premise is about a chef or a bakery owner. Why is that? Onion rings are like another character in this book and rightfully so. The other thing I loved was the way the characters discussed murder like it was a pesky to-do list item. Redecorate the kitchen. Stop at In-and-Out Burger. Kill Frank. Can't wait for the sequel, Jethro! less
