review 1: I put this genre firmly in the guilty-reading category, since it's designed to normalize those thoughts and emotions I'm really not particularly proud of (which isn't necessarily a good thing). But this one really resonated with me just now. Maybe because the author also had children at a similar spacing to mine, but her description of all the least savory parts of life with a toddler + baby were hilarious in their accuracy (ignoring the baby in order to play with the toddler; fantasizing about the quiet and cuddly nursing sessions that only happen with the first baby...) In fact, I may have ignored said toddler's increasingly insistent requests to read Are You My Mother for the 10 billionth time in lieu of finishing this while nursing the baby. Minus one star for the husb... moreand-bashing though. Some of us do in fact have unicorn husbands who pull their weight and more, and I don't think it's as rare as these mommy-kvetching books would have one believe (or maybe I'm just super lucky).
review 2: This book was laugh-out-loud funny! Yes, there was some colourful language in it, but who among us doesn't at least think colourfully when dealing with our spirited children at one time or another? I absolutely loved Jill's sense of humour and she made me feel not quite so alone in the "I have a crazy child who I sometimes want to rent out for a weekend of silence" world of motherhood. Thank you, Jill! You made my night. I'll certainly be gifting a copy of this to my expectant sister so she's well and truly prepared for what motherhood really has in store (in addition to the "I can't believe I love this little person so much it hurts" moments, of course!). less
