review 1: A very thorough book on the worldwide issue of the status of women today. Jimmy Carter has identified the need to address this issue as a major priority, both morally and economically. Permissive violence and bias against women lead to other forms of violence. One example of the pressing nature of this issue is a study that says 16 million girls have been killed either before or at birth simply because the parents wanted a son, instead. This Gendercide is flat out wrong, needs to stop, and can only stop if it is noticed and acted on. The subsequent levels of mistreatment of girls after being born into such a world is scary to imagine, too.
review 2: This is a groundbreaking book of great importance for everyone to read on the subject of the abuse of women.
... more Jimmy Carter rightly labels this social issue as one of the greatest and least addressed human rights violations of our times. Drawing from the richness of diversity in his own life experiences, he recounts how he personally has been confronted with the mistreatment of women from his upbringing in the racially charged South, on campus as a student and professor, in the military, and through his global connections as a politician and through The Carter Center. Especially gripping and inspiring are the accounts of several abused women whose struggles were brought face-to-face with the Carters, and how they were used to make a difference. Whether the mistreatment of women is on the other side of the globe, on the campus three hours away, or just up the block, this book is helpful to paint the global picture, yet bring the responsibility for voicing advocacy on this issue into your own day-to-day world. less
