review 1: This is a true story of heroes -- real heroes. I cannot imagine going through the trials that these brave men suffered. Many of the details of the horrific battles in the South Pacific were eye-openers to me -- especially the treatment these men were given by FDR and General MacArthur. If you choose to read this book, it will make you very sad at times, and -- if you are like me -- you will not leave unaffected. I just have to say: I partly agree with Brokaw. The generation that fought World War Ii -- and that includes those who sacrificed at home in various ways -- were, indeed, among our " greatest generations." The men in this story prove it.
review 2: This was a hard history to swallow. So much of WWII focused on the war in Europe, even though it was the bo
... morembing of Pearl Harbor that brought America into the fight. I know that it wasn't until college that I was able to see a wider scope of the 'world war', but this story brings it a step further. According to the facts in this book, our men fighting in the Pacific, and specifically the Phillipines, received only 1/3 of the supplies of that in Europe... hard to imagine pilots without planes, fighting men surviving on 1/2 rations, and an Allied force with little to no support in general from the US Government. What is even harder to fathom is that after these brave men survived the 63-mile Bataan Death March, more hunger, torture, disease (each man had at least 1 of 4!!) helplessly watching others fall victim to the sword & bayonet... they escaped the camp to find that they were held prisoner a 2nd time! They weren't all evacuated immediately. Reinforcements were not sent immediately. The men who made it back state-side weren't even allowed to discuss the atrocities that befell them at Dapecol and elsewhere. It wasn't for more than a year that anything happened... and coincidentally, the statements about what was going on were released during the 4th War Loan Drive. It saddens me to think of what these men endured, and how much of their needs were ignored both before and after capture. These men are truly heroes, and I'm so glad I was able to read their story. less

Half of the book is about what happens after the escape, which is less interesting in my opinion.

1st half is great. 2nd half was slow. Hard to finish.
