review 1: SPOILERS DO APPEAR IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS REVIEW:The fact that this book was published the same year as the Stonewall Riots astounds me. It is basically a story about adolescence, but since it deals with homosexuality in such a “normal” manner is impressive. Not that the book doesn’t have its faults, and I’ll get to that. This is very well written, with the protagonist’s voice so strong, that you really want to meet this kid. It is totally of the caliber of “The Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13-3/4.” And now for the SPOLIERS: My husband the author once told me “never trust an author who introduces a pet. They’re [the pet] always a metaphor and will be killed off.” So you’ve got Davy and his wonderful dog Fred. Davy messes around with a boy, his ... moreother walks in, takes the dog for a walk and the dog is killed. The mother in this story is a caricature, our stock alcoholic, and really didn’t need to kill the dog for us to have Davy’s sympathy. This also plays into the outdated theory that homosexuality is the Mom’s fault. Davy’s guilt about messing around with his friend gets transferred to guilt around the death of the dog – it becomes his fault. So that is what really feels dated about the whole thing. However, considering the time it was written, and how well it’s written, I do recommend this one, if only for historical context and a good read.
review 2: I'll Get There. It Better Be Worth The Trip by John Donovan Is a young adult book. it is about a time in the life of a teen boy starting the day of his grandmother’s funeral. The grandmother raised him and it is decided that he will then go live with his mother in the city. His relationship with her was not very significant in his life up to that point. He has a dog that he is very close to and that takes up a majority of the book. It was so very hard to finish this book. Firstly, the book was written differently. It consisted of snippets of thoughts written mostly in chronological order. I know I am far from being a teen boy but obviously so is the author because I could not find any emotions (the whole book was emotional) that I could relate to. The ending of the book through me for such a loop that I cannot recommend this book for any young person at all. I could not imagine what kind of author wrote this until I read the year it was written and then it made more since. I am assuming the sentiment revealed in the end of the book was appropriate for almost sixty years ago. I would not want an impressionable teen reading it now without full knowing that it is not a current book. I am so glad to be done the book, I seldom have such a miserable time reading. less

Very well written almost timeless...when reading I never felt that it was over 40 years old.

Great book. Awful ending. Almost cried though, so kudos for that
