review 1: The author occasionally strings together curious bits of dog lore, but much of this disjointed book is familiar, dull, or incorrect. Key issues of animal abuse and neglect are skewed or overlooked. The tone is smug, flippant, and offensive to whole regions of the country, the people who devote themselves to helping animals, and even dogs. There is no theme, and little sense of direction in the book, leaving one to wonder, “What’s this book for?”
review 2: I LOVED this book (I listened to the Audible audiobook.) Homans covers a huge range of issues, from recent discoveries about dog behavior in relation to wolves (Cesar Milan should read this), to humans' relationship with dogs over the centuries, to cultural differences regarding dogs in other countries,
... moreto the No Kill shelter controversy and Pit Bull Problems we are dealing with today. He does a great job of distilling science, and shares both sides of complicated issues. As one who has worked and volunteered in shelters I appreciated the way he treated these issues in particular. Great read. less

Blasé writing; interesting subject. Temple Grandin's "Animals in Translation" is way better.
