review 1: Interesting look at the American civil war written by an British historian. The book isn't just about the battles of the war. He deals with the major ones in the context of the effect each had on the outcome. He has a chapter on the leadership of both sides both military and political. He also deals with the home front of both north and south. This book is unique to have a foreign analysis of the conflict.
review 2: It's a rare work that can make military history interesting and prior to reading this particular book I would only count Anthony Beevor's Stalingrad as a highly enjoyable military history but after completing this book there is certainly another contender for that crown. Keegan writes in such a way that in his descriptions of battle he offers great
... moreswathes of technical information without being overbearingly technical which makes the history of battles a lot more enjoyable to read for the amateur historian. While the focus of the book is undoubtedly the military history of the civil war the author does not neglect to explore all aspects that feed into the overall history of the time and the book benefits greatly from this. The discussion, for example of the medical implications of the Civil war was interesting and received its fair share of attention throughout. Another aspect which was discussed in great detail was the effect terrain had on the unfolding conflict which while mentioned in other works, is only ever really mentioned as a supplementary detail whereas Keegan demonstrates time and again the effect that terrain had on campaigns, battles and the war as a whole. Having read "Battle Cry of Freedom" before this whose one greatest weakness was the arguably tedious detail in which battles were discussed, this was a refreshing discussion of the conflict which explains in clear detail what happened and why it happened the way it did. less
