review 1: A compelling story of 17th century history in the fledgling United Colonies, this books shows the origins of the separation of church and state and individual liberty through the personal story of Roger Williams. I was fascinated with English politics and kings, the House of Lords and Commons, Oliver Cromwell, Native American tribes, the fledgling colonies of Boston, Salem, Plymouth and Providence, the Puritans, the Quakers, whose unique histories are an essential part of the American Ethos. If you ever wondered why the puny state of Rhode Island was ever created, this book will answer all your questions. An important book for every American, which is especially relevant even today as we wrestle with issue of individual liberty and the separation of church and state. T... morehanks to my good friend Tony Natale for sharing this wonderful book.
review 2: It was a little long and there was a lot of quoting of old material from the participants, and I guess that is good for a scholarly history book, but the struggle between the state imposed religion and the right of the individual to believe in any way she wants is a very pressing and alive issue. The American Soul today is split between those two vision of society. Winhtrop and Williams are still pressing their side of the question. The Religious Right still wants government to impose morality and faith on people. The Liberal left want government to allow all kinds of liberty and impose that liberty on everybody. The book makes a good introduction into the issue. less
