review 1: Children's book author John Rocco tells the story of the New England blizzard of 1978. He talks about how the snow started and didn't stop for 2 days! He and his sister had to climb out of a window to get out of the house! All of that snow was fun at first but it quickly became tiresome having to deal with all that snow.As the days wore on and the snowplows still didn't show up, John takes it upon himself to try to get to the store for more milk, bread and eggs. Along the way he checks in with his neighbors to see if they need anything. It's a long trek with his sled and tennis racket snowshoes. But he does make it to the market and back, having delivered important sustenance to his neighborhood. He's a hero.Fantastic illustrations from the Caldecott-honor winning illustr... moreator.
review 2: Age: Preschool-1st gradeA pretty typical winter story with fine illustrations, a fold out spread with a track map, and the most ingenious end note. Rocco explains that he was there during the Blizzard of '78 that buried his family and neighbors under forty inches of snow--which is four times the height of the book. I love that kids can get a visual for the snowfall by using the book as a measuring device. Brilliant! less
