review 1: It is a typical Spong book, which means you won't agree with most of what it has to say, but you'll find it very hard to argue with him. Books like these do indeed create a dialogue between you and the author, which alone makes it a great read. The only real fault I have with the book is how surprisingly vague Spong can be on this issue. His vision of the afterlife while logical and in keeping with earlier works does seem almost anticlimatic, and truly does need some fleshing in. That is just my opinion however. I did enjoy, as I always do, his refreshing no sacred cows approach to scripture which would make fundamentalists cringe, more so since they have no real defense. It is my third book of Lent, and I am glad I picked it up.
review 2: I read Spong's
... more"Eternal Life" eight months ago. I thought he did an excellent job laying out his feelings for life after death. Basically, Spong is honest and says nobody can know for sure about life after death, but, that it is his intuition that whatever eternity God shares in, he (and us) will also share in. He bases many of his spiritual insights on the fourth gospel of John. He makes it clear that his way of celebrating life is living it in the now and living it to the fullest. He views death as a celebration of the living of life. He has made peace with it and believes that our consciousnesses will move on beyond the point of our passing. As I left Christianity years ago, along with its traditional ideas of eternal heaven for believers and eternal hell for the rest of us, books like this one are very welcome spiritual insights to me. To have an intelligent author and spiritualist like Spong reveal their honest intuitions about what may come after this life is very valuable to my new growing philosophy about spirituality. I agree with many of his conclusions. less

I think Spong's best book was his autobiography. This one was disappointing.
