review 2: This was an excellent investigation of the dancing mania which gripped Strasbourg in July 1518 and led to possibly hundreds of people dancing themselves to death. It was also an insight
... moreful and informative account of the pressures of life in late medieval Europe, the bad harvests, the self interested hierarchies, exploitation and domination and the dawning of a new renaissance age.John Waller’s account quickly grips as it sketches out in detail how tough life was for most people. Its great success though is in demonstrating the various pressures and sufferings which combined in this area to create the circumstances for such a horror. And the greatest of these, the final straw, was the loss of hope caused by the betrayal of those charged with promising the everlasting possibility of redemption, the Church.Further to the history though was John Waller’s extrapolation of the dancing mania which gripped the superstitious and forsaken to other psychological phenomena in our more rational age. As we once again live in uncertain times and feel betrayed by our leaders again, we may not dance ourselves to death, but how will our trauma demonstrate itself? less

A interesting little "hearsay history" book. Fun but not much aside from a "huh. ok." reaction.

Synthesizes nicely with a reading of Norman Cohn.
