review 1: John Waters tests whether he is charming and cunning enough to make it across this new America while hitchhiking. His strategy is to model the best and worst scenarios in twin novellas, using fiction to understand each and every way that his feverish imagination might contort his experience, so that he is able to finally deliver the dull truth about our boring country in a way that still provides transcendence. There is only one John Waters: this book is the closest any of us down here will ever get to the divine pleasure of getting to hang out with the man / having him to ourselves for as long as we are willing to go his way.
review 2: Another of John Waters great little books to give to an old lady with a will in your favour while using he phrase "its about
... morea 66 year old hitchhikng across america" before removing it from her body and replacing it with a Maeve Binchy to hide the evidence. It consists of 2 novellas and a travelogue. In the first everything goes swimmingly and he gets picked up by lots of fit young men who are into strange looking older men. Think 50 shades of Gay meets On the Road.In the second everyone he meets turns out to be a deranged fan, how deranged you will have to read to find out but Eli Roth, Quentin Tarantino, and Jigsaw from the Saw movies are interested in being reported as being interested in the movie rights, although possibility this is just so they can have their names in the same sentence as John Waters. The travelogue is what actually happened and involves more rain than the other two parts and noticeably more sanity and evian and less sex, violence and movie quotes than the rest of the book. less

more about John Waters than about hitchhiking the country, but that's ok.
