review 1: I feel like I understand life and art a little better after reading this. Not a lot, perhaps, because I'm not the type to track down really out-there pornographers, begin letter-writing with convicted, notorious murderers, fantastize about being a cult-leader, interview Little Richard, etc. But I have more of an idea about what possibilities are out there. There are a lot of choices to be made, you dig? Sartorial, arty, whatever. I want to make some!
review 2: I read the majority of this book on the subway, heading to and from Brooklyn's Sunset Park for work. Most of the time I was laughing out loud, but there were several times I was very moved, most notably when reading the chapter on Leslie Van Houten. This book is a collection of essays based on Waters' "ro
... morele models" although most would not be considered any kind of role model (except for perhaps Johnny Mathis). Among the famous, you'll also meet some Baltimore characters who help explain how Waters came up with some of his movie characters. Waters loves the people who live at the fringe of society but doesn't make fun of them or write about them from an ironic distance. He loves them, while recognizing that their charming traits don't necessarily work out so well when they have children. less
