review 1: Johnny was no writer, and purely as a book this one is pretty mediocre. But it's a fascinating read about a man who told it like it is and never compromised. He lived life on his own terms. And while he does acknowledge wrongs from time to time, he rarely apologizes for much. He was who he was until the end. And I do mean the end. He couldn't have died much after this book was finished - certainly it was less than a year. His final paragraph even starts with recognition that he might be gone by the time we read this. I am giving the book an extra star because it's full of great photos (Linda, who Johnny "stole" from Joey, is wicked gorgeous) and feels unflinchingly honest. And because it's making me play their music, and that's never a bad thing.
review 2: The
... more Ramones were one of those bands that influenced thousands of bands but sold few records. This book puts a new and different perspective on their almost 30 years together. Written by their guitarest, Johnny Ramone (Born John Cummings), this book tells the story of the band, from the inside. According to Johnny, the common belief that they all got along like brothers was as far from truth as it a idea can be. Marky, the drummer, was an alcholic who would walk away from band pratice randomly and miss shows. Joey, the singer, was a moody to the point where he may have had bipolar disorder. Dee dee, the origional bassest, was a complete stoner who had the worst of childhoods, but was an amazing songwriter, but didnt accually play on the last 3 albums that he was credited with. He apperently never showed up to pratice or recording sessions, so Danial Rey, their producer, was accually the bassest at that point. This book is probably one of my favorite books of all time. I would recomend this book to anyone who like the Ramones, and also to anyone who listens to early punk and would like to learn about its origins. What makes this boo so great is the way it's written. Short, fast, and quick to make a point, the book is almost like a writen version of a song by the Ramones. less

Wanted to know more about The Ramones, and from the original source seemed the best place to start.

It's not Shakespeare...it's definitely raw, unadulterated Johnny Ramone. Great insight to a legend.

Really interesting read, but Johnny isn't the greatest writer...I'll stick to all the great music.

An easy read written from the thoughts and style of a rock legend.
