review 1: I also have Cron's Disease and found that I could relate to his feelings and cravings for foods that I can't or shouldn't eat. I love how he focused on the emotional journey his illness took him on. It is also a great look into life changes and making the most of them. This is a very powerful story! I think that it is a must read for anyone with Cron's or anyone who knows someone with Crohn's.
review 2: I picked up this book based on having heard the 04/02/12 Radiolab podcast episode "Guts," in which the author and his story were featured. After reading the book, though, it feels to me as if the subject was handled more concisely and compellingly in that radio segment. The book was an outgrowth of an Esquire article, "How Men Eat," for which Reiner won the
... more2010 James Beard Foundation Award for Magazine Feature Writing. I may try to get my hands on that article at some point. Word length constraints force a different kind of story-telling, and maybe I'd like that better. Clearly, this man and his family have been through hell and I wish them all the very best. I wanted to like the book more than I did. less

Really eye-opening look at living with Crohn's disease. He's sardonically funny and very insightful.

Interesting at times, but not a great read.
