The Innocents (2016)

In December 1945 a young Red Cross doctor Mathilde  (Lou de Laage) tries to help a group of pregnant nuns at a convent in Warsaw.

I went into this film not knowing much about it and I think that really helped because that way I would have been watching the film without needing to measure it up to realism etc.

The acting from all was good and the atmosphere was perfect, because it showed the aftermath rather than the actual ordeal. De Laage was good in her role of the doctor and as a character she is fleshed out. Her character and the characters of the nuns are linked by a desire to survive their own personal ordeals.

I think foreign film is to be approached warily to begin with because it seems to have a different set of values to ordinary cinema. It is also quite slow paced but the pay off is worth it in the end.

A good film for foreign film aficionados to add to their arsenal of cinema.

MY RATING: **** / *****
