review 1: Although I already had an armful of books, this 'Staff Pick' caught my eye at our circulation desk- oh happy day!Jon Ronson is already a favorite of mine for his brilliant radio stories on This American Life. This collection on of essays is perfect for nosey looky-loos like myself who need Ronson's work to vicariously investigate the greatest human mysteries. His informal experiments with subprime lenders comprise my favorite chapter. Hurrah, Jon Ronson! Please keep writing!
review 2: DNF. There are some really interesting stories here, but they're all pretty dark and gloomy. Somewhere between Ronson's interviews with Insane Cloud Posse and his talks with the townspeople of Christmas-centered North Pole, Alaska about a failed school shooting, I got so bummed ou
... moret that I just had to give up on this one. It's not Ronson's fault, I just wasn't in the mood for this book. The most interesting/least depressing section had to do with Ronson's visit to Stanley Kubrick's home and his look inside the director's archives--it turns out that Kubrick kept every piece of fan mail he ever received and was fascinated by fonts. Ronson's interviews with Kubrick's widow, Christiane, and his staff were illuminating, even though I'm not a fan of Kubrick's movies ("Eyes Wide Shut" was just ugh for me). less
