review 1: "Eating Animals" explores the social relationship to the animals we consume. Foer does his best to explore first-hand the way modern domesticated animals raised for their meat and milk live and die. He documents the influence industry wields over regulations and even the definition of "cruelty;" the abuses of factory farming; its implications for the sustainability of the environment and its frightening consequences for public health. Through primary sourcing, Foer seals the case against factory farming. Foer doesn't offer such easy answers on the activity that gives the book its title. He endorses heritage farming and acknowledges the pain that giving up eating animals entails for humans (taking a stand and losing some of the connective tissue that eating entails - losing... more connection to others), however he also seems to celebrate the harmony that comes with an ethical plan of eating. He brilliantly opens the book by pointing to the ethical blind spot of not eating companion animals and electing to condone the slaughter of billions of head of livestock. Other than the one (no factory farms), Foer doesn't offer easy answers and thus achieves his aim of raising consciousness without proselytizing. "Eating Animals" is a fine place to begin one's exploration of the ethics of eating but won't be the final word.
review 2: I enjoyed reading about vegan/vegetarianism from a more theoretical, philosophical standpoint. The author looks at the ethics and morals of abstaining from meat eating. I found it interesting, though, that he doesn't look at the dairy/egg side of it, probably because he himself is not vegan, but vegetarian. Still, a very good read. His perspective will really change yours! My favorite aspect is probably all the interviews he did and the people he spent time with and talked to in order to research this book. There is a broad, diverse spectrum of viewpoints and that is really refreshing and interesting. less
